For Scharffen Chocolate, their beginnings were truly exceptional. What else would bring two long term friends together in a business venture but a passion for chocolate? Retired doctor, Robert Steinberg and winemaker, John Scharffen Berger decided just to do so. Robert Steinberg traveled to Lyons, France where he learned the art of pure chocolate making. Taking this information he approached his friend, John Scharffen Berger former owner of Scharffen Berger Wineries. In 1996, the two began combining their knowledge and skills, researched different beans, experimented till they produced a consistently wonderful chocolate. Continuing with their small batch process they have quickly grown to a thriving business that has been a culinary adventure.
